  • “Neftçi” made debut in UEFA Champions League in 1997/98 season. “White-blacks” lost to Polish “Widzew” (0:2) at home on July 23, 1997, and conceded 8 goals on 2nd leg match on July 30.

    Second attempt at the most prestigious club tournament of continent was successful for Flagman. In 1st Qualifying Round, “Neftçi” defeated “Široki Brijeg” (Bosnia and Herzegovina) thanks to away goal in 2004/05 season - 1:2, 1:0. In 2nd Qualifying Round, head coach Kazbek Tuayev's team lost to CSKA (Russia) - future winner of UEFA Cup (0:0, 0:2).

    “Neftçi” also represented Azerbaijan in UEFA Champions League in 2005/06 season. This time the 1st Qualifying Round barrier was passed under leadership of head coach Aghasalim Mirjavadov. Flagman won both matches (2: 0, 2: 1) against “Hafnarfjarðar” (Iceland), then lost to Belgian giant “Anderlecht” in 1st leg match in away - 0:5. Victory (1:0) in 2nd leg match on 3 August 2005 was not only consolation for Flagman, also being beneficial in terms of adding points to UEFA ranking.

    Next participation of “Neftçi” in UEFA Champions League in 2011/12 season was unsuccessful this time. “White-blacks” joined the tournament directly from 2nd Qualifying Round, and lost to “Dinamo” (Zagreb, Croatia) - 0:3, 0:0.

    “Neftçi” started 2012/13 season in UEFA Champions League and got greatest success in European Cups. Team of head coach Boyukagha Hajiyev also joined the tournament directly from 2nd Qualifying Round this time and defeated “Zestafoni” (Georgia) - 3:0, 2:2. Our team lost to “Hapoel” (Kiryat Shmona, Israel) in 3rd Qualifying Round (0:4, 2:2), and had to continue in UEFA Europa League and qualified to group stage for the first time in club history.

    “Neftçi” next competed in UEFA Champions League in 2013/14 season. On July 17, 2013, “white-blacks” could not score against “Skënderbeu in Baku (0:0), and finished competition with defeat - 0:1.

    Finally, after 8 years - in 2021/22 season, “Neftçi” again got right to participate in the biggest club tournament of Europe. In the first round, Flagman defeated “Dinamo” (Tbilisi, Georgia) with same score in both matches - 2:1, and became rival of Greek giant “Olympiacos”. Our team lost with a minimal difference in both matches with confident performance against Piraeus team, and continued in UEFA Europa League.

    In total, “Neftçi” played 22 matches in UEFA Champions League. Our team got 7 victories, 10 defeats, and drew in 5 matches. Goal difference is 18-36.
